    Hello all, [SM=g2915736]

I am new to this forum, so pleas excuse my delays and mistakes as I still have to get hold of the required controls. My main line of modeling is Marine, and at the moment I am working on a 1:72nd scale model of the German heavy Battle Cruiser - the DKM Scharnhorst, which measures some 3260mm in length. The model is so big and complicated, that some times I have to take a break, and work on something more simple. Or at least I thought it would be. I love Italian WW2 armour, as it has a characteristic of t's own, and the wheeled vehicles, were probably the best, especially for the desert terrain.
I bought this resin model, during a scale model exhibition in Blackpool UK, where I was invited to judge the Competition models of the Marine Section.
The cost of the Resin Kit was of about Euro 140.00, and I thought that it would be a treat. And indeed it is. As I opened the box I realized that most of the resin parts are warped, and the detail leaves much to be desired, so I decided to construct from scratch all the main part of the model.

I would like to share this build with you all, as I believe that this way our hobby would be more interesting and informative.

I am still trying to figure out as how to post the pictures, so please be a bit patient for the time being.

    Hi Paul!

The project seems interesting, do not worry about the pictures, learning how to post them has been a hard fight for all of us [SM=g27822]

I'm sorry to hear that you spent a lot of money for a low quality model, but I'm sure that your scratchbuilt improvements can give the model a good look.

If you need help for anything, just ask [SM=g27811]

Di che marca è il kit del Lancia?
Possibile che contenga così tanti errori?
    Comunque buon lavoro ed hobby

Hello Marco and Challenger 1 MK3,

Thanks for browsing my log. The kit was produced by Criel Models.

Basically the errors are mainly in the thickness of the components. For example, the resin gun shield is 1.5mm thick. At a scale of 35, the thickness would be of over 40mm which is incorrect. The thickness of the gun shield would have been of 10mm to 12mm maximum, so I had to scratch build it, using 0.35mm thick styrene sheet and Evergreen profiles.
The chassis and the gun platform were warped, and the detail was rough, so I decided to scratch build those as well. the rear wheel linkages are not included in the kit, so I have to produce them as well. The engine is a total disaster and the thickness of the driver cabin walls is so out of scale, that of course, I have to built it as well. Basically, the kit is only there to be able to take the measurements. As from tomorrow, I will start posting some pictures, and you will see the difference.

Good morning to all (Buona Domenica) [SM=g2915747]

I am posting some photos of the work till now. I have started off with the base Chassis of the Lancia 3/RO. The kit produces the resin chassis as a square section, but that s totally wrong. The Chassis was constructed from a steel channel section, so I decided to reproduce it again from scratch.

I shall be sending the second part soon.

    Hello again,

I am sending the second part of the construction. But first I would like to explain something. The circular gun platform, present with this model kit is supposed to represent a steel gun platform. Some early models, which I would think the 1939 models, though were issued with a timber laminated gun platform. This was done to create a non slip gun platform. Later on during the war, the gun platforms were only made from steel, and proved to be very slippery for the gun crews. Just put in mind that the army boots had steel studs at the sole.

    Here are the pictures.

    Very nice work!!
I love this vehicle, (and the lack of a styrene kit is a true pity in my opinion).

    Buon Giorno Marino,
